I say...Let's buy into the damn thing.....
So what if we decided to buy shares, or request that share be available?

These links may answer some questions...

I found this interesting link with almost all of the information of creating our own community.

This is just one of the options mentioned. As you read please remember I'm not recommending company on the site, I'm recommending the information provided there.

The Fat Lady Has Not Yet Sung
If you think it's over, it isn't. stewardess tells us a very, very plausible reason for the purge.

The censorship is not over, and if LJ does go public, it will never be the haven it was in its days before SixApart.

cordelia_v suggests it might be time for fandom to migrate. I think so, too. What do you think? PLEASE pimp this poll far and wide!

Poll #995890 Fandom's New Home

When LJ goes public, where should fandom migrate?

We should stay put at LJ
We should go to GreatestJournal - it's free
We should go to JournalFen, even though it's not free
We should go to DeadJournal
We should go somewhere else

If you answered "We should go somewhere else" to the last question, where should we go?

Name your top few fandoms

Please click here if you answered any question on this poll

I took this poll.

My comment response to the latest "news"
What about the survivor communities and novel discussion groups?
Are you going to restore them?
They deserve a HUGE apology and more.
Lolita is NOT a bad word, it happens to be a novel.

Now, how is it that you all decided to listen to three fundamentalists from "Warriors for Innocence" who are associated with the oh so un-wonderful folks who brought us "Jesus Camp?" Geez. Next time, please do your research before pushing the panic button.

All of this was unnecessary.
You won't pull the accounts of people who are harassing and/or stalking others
"contact local authorities first"
but you pulled the accounts of people who have survived rape
[no "contact local authorities first" there].
Something intrinsically rotten about that.

Is Six Apart a front for a fundie organization?

Freedom of [electronic and other] speech implies that sometimes any of us may run across content that we do not care to read or engage in.
The BACK BUTTON still works, folks.
BTW, I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, rape, and professional rape.

Talking about raping kids or having sex with underaged kids is not the same as doing it.
Writing fanfic and rapefic about these topics is not the same as issuing directions or a how to manual and is not the same as posting kiddie porn
and is not the same as stalking members of a survivor community.

Who gets to determine community standards or what a "reasonable" person would object to???
Who is a reasonable person anyways?
Here's a clue: those wonderful folks over at "Warriors for Innocence" are not reasonable people. They infest computers of visitors to their site with spyware. Not very christian of them, is that?
Oh, I forgot, they are being held up as reasonable.

Who's next on the target list?
Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals, intersexed, asexuals, queers, questioning?
Anyone who does not belong to a mainstream religion?
Anyone who is not a conservative republican?
Anyone who is not into Michael Moore or other cultural icon?

I am angry.
I understand fully that this is not really "our" space, that we are in a way renting electronic space from Six Apart.

If you really want to purge the active pedos, you can do what MySpace did after a lone individual wrote a program comparing the sign-up names with those on sexual predators databases.

If you really cared about pre-teens being exposed to unsuitable content, you might consider upping the age to 18 to be here and/or provide safe monitored space for teens apart from the rest of l.j.

Whatever happened to parental responsibility for the electronic whereabouts of their kids???

Please l.j., no more favors. I don't need to be protected from my self and my interests, however base they may appear to be to the fundamentalist idiots over at Warriors for Installationofspyware.

Modly tasks ahead of us
I have the following mod tasks in mind that, once we have the information gathered, we can make a comprehensive post about. I think we need to do the following things, and if you think of something else, please tell me and I'll add it to the list.

  • We need to come up with a comprehensive list of sponsors to boycott, with the names, the email and the snail-mail addresses of the CFOs of those organizations to let them know we're doing it. The sponsors we ought to go after are the ones who've withdrawn their ads from LJ, current sponspors threatening to pull out and sponsors of the entity attacking us on LJ. Who would like to voluneer and do a little digging around?

  • We need to draft a form letter we can encourage members to personalize and send to these executives. We should provide them with a base letter with a paragraph or two stating why we are boycotting, then let them choose a few optional boilerplate statements to add to their letters, if they chose.

  • We need someone to investigate how the ACLU can help back us, so we can determine if asking for their help is the right course to take.

  • We need someone to trawl LJ and gather together all the posts and links that talk about how to phone, email or otherwise voice our complaints to SixApart.

  • Once we have a comprehensive post written, we will need someone (or many someones) to post links to the post in fannish communities, as a resource they can use to fight back.

  • We need someone to design or find someone to help us design icons for the comm, and maybe a banner. In the meantime, feel free to use the comm userpic, if you want. I'd like the theme of the icons to be related to the Bill of Rights or the Constitution.

I'm calling for volunteers to take up one of these tasks, or share a larger task with another mod. Please respond in comments which task you would like to work on, and when we've got a complete assignment list, I encourage you to post in our comm a plea for helpers if you need them.

I'll take a look at everyone's responses tomorrow night and post a formal assignment list with responsible parties at that time.

If anyone has any other ideas for next steps, please comment and I'll add them to the list.

Thank you! Together, we are strong!

Trying to do my bit...
Created an icon. Please feel free to use. It's not fancy, but I think it would be cool if we could get a mass of people to use one icon (this one or any other we agree on) for a while to make a statement. Just a thought.

can someone point me in the direction of the linkable banners? i plan to post it on some of my Communties but i cant find them

Banned Words in your Interests list
Here's an interesting thought.  What if we all put the banned words (as well as "survivor, advocate, activist, writer") in our interests?  Doing the LJ equivalent of the "09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0" thing.

I mean, how many journals can they delete?   And if they'll delete for your interests, did you really want to be here in the first place?
5:06 pm
Talk to the sponsors!
Does anyone know which of LJ's ad sponsors have withdrawn? We need to find out who they are, then tell them we will boycott their products if they don't reinstate ads at Livejournal. If we bring to bear the greater market pressure and accuse them of bowing to the pressures of anti-free-speech groups, maybe they'll reverse their decision to withdraw their ads. So, does anyone know?

I know that ancarett posted phone number contacts, which is a brilliant way to get a hold of SixApart; however, I've also seen some members expressing concern with the inability to call overseas. If you can't call (or just don't wish to), but still wish to be heard, the SixApart's management page may be a good place to start.

Let them know you don't plan on buying a permanent account next month, and/or that you don't plan on renewing your paid account. (Make certain you don't have auto-payments selected, and if you do, cancel it.) Let them know you won't be using a plus account. Tell them you won't be supporting their sponsors. That you won't be buying vgifts or extra icons, etc.

I don't want to say we should resort to blackmail and push at them the way WFI did, because I'd like to believe we can behave better than that, but do make your voices heard. We're not the bad people here; the majority of those suspended yesterday weren't either. I'd also like to believe we all can applaud the locking down/locking up of true sexual predators, but that WFI clearly doesn't have the background or information to attempt such an project – point in case being that we aren't the people they're 'looking' for.

[edit]: ragdoll has pointed out a news post wherein people are commenting to tell LJ that they will be withdrawing any financial support in future if the current situation isn't rectified.

Something you can do right now:
Please check out this post on ancarett's journal for a calm, cool and collected phone call you can make to voice your objections to SixApart.

Strategic Planning
We are formed to vocally and strenuously object to knee-jerk, emotional reactions to the events peddled to us in the press. We must band together and call them on it, the purveyors of this kind of shoddy argument, and not let them get away with it. We must publicly disdain every piece of sematically meaningless, emotionally-laden rhetoric that pervades our politics and our press and demand logical, disinterested, meaningful discourse. We must write letters, send emails and phone in in droves to the media that perpetuates this kind of hysteria, and expose their reporting for what it is: fear-mongering. Our voices must be loud, loud enough to drown out those who would lay blame rather than search for a solution, those who promote oppression over tolerant discourse, those who invoke hysteria over cool reason. We must be on our guard for it at all times at home, at work and at play. We must fight it wherever we find it.

To accomplish any of this, we will need a well-thought-out strategy. I open the floor to questions and discussion on how to maximize the outcomes of our goals.
